Cold Brew, Cherry and Almond Delight
Here’s a fun and delicious cocktail recipe for the summer. My Frozen Orange Aperol Spritz gets a flavor boost from the addition of tangerine balsamic vinegar (unexpected but perfect here). This recipe takes a little planning since you need to freeze the orange juice ice cubes, but you can do that in as little as two hours before making the cocktails. I typically just pop them in the freezer the night before I’m planning on making this drink.
When it is time to make the drinks, I chill my glasses in the freezer for about 20 minutes. You want everything ice cold. Then, just pop all the ingredients in the blender and process until smooth. You wind up with an aperol slushie that is delicious. If you haven’t tried Aperol, let me share the most frequently asked questions about it.
Aperol is an Italian liqueur that is widely known for its bright orange color and distinctive bitter-sweet taste. The liqueur’s recipe is based on an infusion of bitter and sweet oranges, herbs, and roots.
The main flavors of Aperol are derived from its primary ingredient, the bitter orange, which gives it a refreshing citrusy taste with a subtle bitterness.
Aperol is a liqueur, not a liquor. The distinction between liquor and a liqueur lies in the alcohol content and the sweetness level. Liqueurs are alcoholic beverages made from a distilled spirit base and are sweetened with added sugars and often infused with various flavors. Liqueurs typically have a lower alcohol content than liquors. They are often used in cocktails or enjoyed on their own as digestifs.
Liquors, on the other hand, are alcoholic beverages produced through distillation. They have a much higher alcohol content than liqueurs, usually ranging from 40% to 50% ABV or even higher. Common examples of liquors include vodka, rum, whiskey, gin, tequila, and brandy.
Aperol falls into the category of liqueurs because it has a relatively low alcohol content, typically around 11%, and is sweetened and flavored with various botanicals, particularly bitter and sweet oranges, to create its distinctive taste.
Aperol is typically found in the liquor store or alcohol section of the grocery store in the liqueur section. It’s bright orange in color and distinct bottle design make it relatively easy to spot on the shelves. I can buy it at Total Wine & More, BevMo and sometimes in my regular grocery store.
The price of Aperol runs between $18 and $25 US dollars depending on the size of the bottle and where you purchase it. On average, the Aperol price is about $22 for a 750ml sized bottle as of July, 2023.
I simply garnish this drink with a half-moon slice of orange. Enjoy!
