Taco Pizza Ingredients
In this taco pizza, you can use either a ball of pizza dough you purchase at the store or a can of pizza dough from the chilled section in your local store. The can is about 13 – 14 ounces but that is just fine. Of course, if you make your own dough, use that.
Whole wheat pizza dough would work, as would, gluten-free dough. So, use your favorite. I’ve also used this taco meat mixture and all the toppings on store bought pita breads and even toasted English Muffins when serving kids. Use the base vehicle of your choice.
In this recipe, I’ve used ground turkey. Feel free to use ground beef, lamb or pork. They all work. Ground turkey vs. ground chicken? You can use either, but the chicken tends to be very lean and without much flavor, so I prefer the turkey. If you are watching your saturated fat intake, you can also get 99% fat-free ground turkey. If you use this or the ground chicken, I’d saute the meat in a tablespoon of olive oil to add some moisture to the meat.
I really like the Shawhan Taco Seasoning. It is the perfect taco seasoning for ground turkey. It has all the right spices and isn’t too hot. If you have your own favorite taco seasoning, feel free to use that but give this one a try.
When it comes to toppings, the sky is the limit. I’ve given you a lot of choices but feel free to add your own favorites. Some of my favorite taco toppings are:
Black olives
Onions
Jalapenos
Tomatoes
Shredded Iceberg lettuce
Sour cream or Greek yogurt or Fat-free Greek yogurt
Crushed taco chips
Avocado
Salsa
Mexican Crema
Taco sauce
Cheddar Cheese, shredded
Mozzarella Cheese, shredded
Queso Fresco, crumbled
How to make the ground turkey taco pizza
Start by preheating the oven to 400 degrees F. Roll out the dough into a rectangle and press into a rectangle baking sheet.
Prepare your taco meat. Spray a skillet with cooking spray and add the chopped onion, garlic, meat and two tablespoons of the taco seasoning. Break up the meat with a wooden spoon or spatula. Sprinkle with a large pinch of salt and black pepper. Stir and cook for about 8-10 minutes until the meat is brown and the vegetables are soft. Let cool completely.
Top your pizza dough with the salsa just like it was tomato sauce. Top that with the cooled taco meat mixture. Top that with the two cheeses and put in the oven to bake. Bake until cheese is melted and brown in spots and the pizza dough is cooked through. About 25 minutes.
