Peak Peach Season: When to Make These Skewers

The key to exceptional peach prosciutto honey skewers lies in using perfectly ripe, in-season peaches. Here’s when you can find the best peaches across different states:

  • Florida: Mid April to late May
  • California: Early May to early September
  • Georgia: Early May to early August
  • South Carolina: Early May to early August
  • Michigan: Mid July to late September
  • New Jersey: July to September
  • Idaho: August to October

For the best results, choose peaches that yield slightly to gentle pressure and have a sweet, fragrant aroma. The natural sweetness of ripe peaches pairs beautifully with the saltiness of prosciutto and the creaminess of mozzarella.

Ingredients: What Makes These Skewers Special

Each ingredient in these honey peach appetizers brings unique qualities that create a harmonious flavor profile:

Fresh Peaches: Provide natural sweetness, vitamin C, and beautiful color. Their soft texture contrasts perfectly with the other components.

Prosciutto: This dry-cured Italian ham adds sophisticated saltiness and umami depth. Its delicate texture wraps beautifully around peach slices.

Fresh Mozzarella (Ciliegine or Bocconcini): Cherry-sized mozzarella balls offer creamy texture and mild flavor that balances the stronger tastes of peach and prosciutto.

Fresh Basil: Adds an aromatic, herbaceous note that bridges the sweet and savory elements while providing a pop of color.

Honey: Acts as a natural sweetener and glaze, enhancing the peach’s natural sugars while adding beneficial antioxidants and antimicrobial properties.

  • Wrap with Prosciutto:  Carefully lay each slice of Prosciutto on a cutting board and cut in half.  (about 1-2″ x 2-3″). Gently wrap each peach wedge with a piece of prosciutto, being careful not to tear the delicate meat.

Storage and Make-Ahead Tips

These appetizers using prosciutto are best enjoyed fresh, but you can prepare components in advance:

Prep Ahead: Slice peaches, cut prosciutto, and portion mozzarella up to 4 hours in advance. Store separately in airtight containers in the refrigerator.

Assembly Timing: Assemble skewers no more than 2 hours before serving to maintain optimal texture. The peaches can soften and prosciutto may lose its delicate texture if assembled too far in advance.

Avoid Sogginess: Wait until just before serving to drizzle with honey or any liquid garnish to prevent the ingredients from becoming soggy.

Leftovers: Store any remaining skewers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours, though texture and flavor are best when consumed the same day.

Use ripe but firm peaches that yield slightly to pressure. Freestone varieties are easier to slice, but clingstone peaches work well too.

Yes, honey offers several health advantages over refined sugar. As a natural sweetener, honey is a better and less inflammatory choice than regular sugar, and studies revealed that the medicinal effect of honey may be due to of its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, apoptotic, and antioxidant properties. Additionally, some studies have shown more potential health benefits to consuming honey. One study found that women who ate honey moderately had a lower risk of high blood pressure. However, honey should still be consumed in moderation as part of a balanced diet.

Absolutely! Hot honey or spicy honey adds an exciting flavor dimension that complements the sweet peaches beautifully. The heat creates a nice contrast with the cooling mozzarella.
Try substituting with ripe pears, figs, apricots, or even cantaloupe. Each brings its own delicious flavor profile while maintaining the sweet-savory balance.
This depends on the size of your ingredients, but typically 2 medium peaches will make 12 skewers, perfect for a small gathering.
Yes! Cherry tomatoes are a popular addition that adds color and acidity. You could also include cucumber for crunch or different herbs like mint. I also like a drizzle of balsamic vinegar for a little tang.
