Honey Peach Prosciutto & Mozzarella Skewers: The Perfect Healthy Summer Appetizer
When peach season arrives, there’s nothing quite like capturing that sweet, juicy flavor in a stunning appetizer that’s as beautiful as it is delicious. These honey peach prosciutto and mozzarella skewers combine the best of summer’s bounty with sophisticated Italian flavors, creating a healthy appetizer that’s perfect for entertaining or enjoying as a light starter. Italians love the peach cheese combination as you can taste in my grilled peaches with mascarpone & balsamic drizzle.
This delicious spin on traditional caprese flavors transforms a classic salad into elegant antipasto skewers. By combining sweet honey peach with salty prosciutto, creamy fresh mozzarella, and aromatic basil, you get a perfect balance of sweet and savory flavors with varied textures in every bite. These prosciutto wrapped appetizers are not only visually stunning but also incredibly nutritious, making them an ideal choice for health-conscious hosts and guests alike.
Why These Honey Peach Skewers Are a Healthy Choice
These prosciutto peach appetizers offer numerous nutritional benefits that make them an excellent healthy starter option. Peaches are packed with vitamins A and C, potassium, and fiber, while providing natural sweetness without refined sugars. Fresh mozzarella is an excellent source of protein and calcium, with lower sodium content than many aged cheeses. Prosciutto, though cured, provides high-quality protein and essential amino acids in moderate portions.
Meanwhile, healthline.com say honey is rich in nutrients and antioxidants, has antibacterial properties, and can play a role in diabetes management as part of a balanced diet. I use honey from The Honey Jar in Utah – fabulous!
The combination of fresh fruit, quality protein, and minimal processing makes these peach and prosciutto appetizers a wholesome choice. Unlike many party appetizers that rely on heavy sauces or fried components, these skewers celebrate natural flavors and provide sustained energy without the sugar crash often associated with processed party foods.
Peak Peach Season: When to Make These Skewers
The key to exceptional peach prosciutto honey skewers lies in using perfectly ripe, in-season peaches. Here’s when you can find the best peaches across different states:
- Florida: Mid April to late May
- California: Early May to early September
- Georgia: Early May to early August
- South Carolina: Early May to early August
- Michigan: Mid July to late September
- New Jersey: July to September
- Idaho: August to October
For the best results, choose peaches that yield slightly to gentle pressure and have a sweet, fragrant aroma. The natural sweetness of ripe peaches pairs beautifully with the saltiness of prosciutto and the creaminess of mozzarella.
Ingredients: What Makes These Skewers Special
Each ingredient in these honey peach appetizers brings unique qualities that create a harmonious flavor profile:
Fresh Peaches: Provide natural sweetness, vitamin C, and beautiful color. Their soft texture contrasts perfectly with the other components.
Prosciutto: This dry-cured Italian ham adds sophisticated saltiness and umami depth. Its delicate texture wraps beautifully around peach slices.
Fresh Mozzarella (Ciliegine or Bocconcini): Cherry-sized mozzarella balls offer creamy texture and mild flavor that balances the stronger tastes of peach and prosciutto.
Fresh Basil: Adds an aromatic, herbaceous note that bridges the sweet and savory elements while providing a pop of color.
Honey: Acts as a natural sweetener and glaze, enhancing the peach’s natural sugars while adding beneficial antioxidants and antimicrobial properties.
Ingredient Substitutions
Honey Variations
- Hot Honey or Spicy Honey: Add a kick of heat that beautifully complements the sweet peaches
- Honey and Spice Honey: Infused varieties with cinnamon, cardamom, or other spices add complexity
- Flavored Honey: Try lavender, wildflower, or clover honey for different flavor profiles
Other Substitutions
- Cheese: Substitute burrata for extra creaminess, or try goat cheese for tanginess
- Fruit: Use ripe figs, pears, apricots, or cantaloupe when peaches aren’t in season
- Herbs: Replace basil with fresh mint or arugula for different flavor notes
- Meat: Try serrano ham or coppa as alternatives to prosciutto
How to Assemble Perfect Skewers
Creating beautiful peach prosciutto skewers requires careful assembly for both presentation and structural integrity:
- Prepare the Peaches: Wash and dry the peaches. Using a sharp knife, cut along the seam of the peach all the way around the peach all the way to the pit. Holding both sides of the peach, twist gently in opposite direction to separate one half of the peach from the pit. Then, using my secret tool, the grapefruit spoon, remove the pit. The sharp teeth on the spoon make removing pits so easy. Then, slice each ripe peach half into three wedges for a total of 12 wedges. Each wedge should be substantial enough to wrap with prosciutto but not so large that it overwhelms the skewer.
- Wrap with Prosciutto: Carefully lay each slice of Prosciutto on a cutting board and cut in half. (about 1-2″ x 2-3″). Gently wrap each peach wedge with a piece of prosciutto, being careful not to tear the delicate meat.
- Thread the Skewer: Have your ingredients set up so you can assemble everything. Have twelve fresh basil leaves fresh from the plant and 12 mozzarella balls drained from their soaking liquid. Have your 12 skewers (4-6 inches long are perfect) ready to go. Place a mozzarella ball on top of a basil leaf, then place that on top of a Prosciutto wrapped peach wedge. Insert the skewer through the middle of everything creating the perfect bite. The order helps balance the skewer and keeps them standing up on a platter.
- Arrange and Finish: Place assembled skewers on a serving platter. Then, just before serving, drizzle with honey. At this point you could also sprinkle with a little flaky salt (be careful, Prosciutto can be salty) or drizzle with a little balsamic vinegar too.
Storage and Make-Ahead Tips
These appetizers using prosciutto are best enjoyed fresh, but you can prepare components in advance:
Prep Ahead: Slice peaches, cut prosciutto, and portion mozzarella up to 4 hours in advance. Store separately in airtight containers in the refrigerator.
Assembly Timing: Assemble skewers no more than 2 hours before serving to maintain optimal texture. The peaches can soften and prosciutto may lose its delicate texture if assembled too far in advance.
Avoid Sogginess: Wait until just before serving to drizzle with honey or any liquid garnish to prevent the ingredients from becoming soggy.
Leftovers: Store any remaining skewers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours, though texture and flavor are best when consumed the same day.
About Prosciutto: The Star Protein
Prosciutto literally translates to “ham” in Italian and represents thousands of years of Italian curing tradition. The highest quality prosciutto, such as Prosciutto di Parma, is made with specially bred pigs from central-northern Italy, Mediterranean sea salt, air, and time. This 100% natural cured ham contains no preservatives, additives, gluten, or artificial coloring, making it a clean protein choice for health-conscious diners.
The traditional pairing of fruit and prosciutto, especially melon and prosciutto, demonstrates how the sweetness of fruit perfectly balances the saltiness of cured ham. Peaches offer a seasonal alternative that’s equally delicious, with their juicy sweetness and beautiful color making them ideal for these elegant appetizers.
Understanding Fresh Mozzarella
Fresh mozzarella’s creamy, semi-soft texture and mild flavor make it perfect for these skewers. Unlike aged cheeses, fresh mozzarella has higher water content and lower fat and sodium levels, making it a healthier choice. For skewers, ciliegine (cherry-sized) or bocconcini (bite-sized) work best, providing the perfect portion size for each bite.
The mild flavor of fresh mozzarella allows the peach and prosciutto flavors to shine while adding essential protein and calcium to make these appetizers more satisfying and nutritionally complete.

Serving Suggestions and Presentation
