Grilled Hoisin Shrimp is the easiest and fastest appetizer you’ll ever make. It is also great as dinner when served with veggies and rice. Just a couple of ingredients and it tastes great. I often serve this at BBQs so people have something to snack on while the main entrée is cooking. You can grill these right on the BBQ (just skewer them or put them in a grill basket). I make them a lot at home too, so I’ll use my indoor grill pan. I hate calling this a recipe, because it is so simple, but don’t we all need some of these in regular rotation? Use the best shrimp you can find. By any size shrimp you like…larger shrimp make them easier on the grill but all shrimp work.
To get started, hit your grill or grill pan and spray them with cooking spray to keep the shrimp from sticking. If you are using wooden skewers, soak them in water for at least an hour to keep them from burning.
Buy your shrimp already peeled and deveined to save time. Otherwise, peel them and devein them leaving the shrimp tails on. They work as a “handle” to pick up the shrimp to eat. Very convenient at barbecues. Season the shrimp with salt and pepper.
If using skewers, skewer the shrimp near the tail and then again near where the head was. This will keep them straight. Again, I often don’t bother with skewers and just use my grill pan and tongs to flip them.
On an outdoor grill, if you don’t have a grill basket, you’ll definitely want to skewer them to keep them from falling through the grates.
I chop up a couple of green onions to garnish the plate when I’m done. Have toasted sesame seeds ready to finish the dish. It is time to grill the shrimp.
You will cook them for about two minutes on each side until they turn pink and slightly curl. Don’t overcook them or they will get tough. Immediately remove them from the heat and drizzle with a good quality hoisin sauce. I sprinkle them with toasted sesame seeds and the sliced green onion. Don’t it get any easier? Kids love them, adults devour them and it is the fastest dish ever.
Serve them piled high on a large platter or on individual plates as an appetizer. They work great next to a steak as the “surf”.

Ingredients
- 1 LB. Large Shrimp, peeled and deveined – tail on
- ¼ Cup Hoisin sauce
- 1 Tbsp. Sesame seeds
- 3 Green onion, chopped
- Salt & Pepper to taste
Instructions
- Heat a grill pan to medium high heat. Spray with cooking spray.
- Sprinkle the shrimp with salt and pepper and grill in the pan for about 2 minutes on each side until just cooked through.
- Plate the shrimp and drizzle with hoisin sauce and sprinkle sesame seeds on top. Garnish with the chopped green onion.
